- The Band Director should be an active or recently retired member in good standing with NWDBA.
- The Band Director’s program should be one of excellence, providing students with many and varied performance opportunities, including those offered at district and
state levels as well as, displaying a consistent record of Superior Ratings at MPA.
- The candidate must have also displayed outstanding success in many critical areas of education that may include teaching skills, musicianship, leadership and
consistent high level of performance by ensembles.
- The Band Director shows a consistent pattern of service to the NWDBA as an officer, board member, committee member, event chairman, etc.
- The Director must have taught in the NW District for at least 7 years.
- The Director should be someone that is thought of among his or her colleagues as a “top quality” teacher, director and person.

Nominations and voting for the Award of Excellence will be made at the annual winter business meeting. Nominations may be made by active members only.
Each member will have one vote.  Each year the Award of Excellence nominees will alternate between a middle school and a high school director.

The recipient of this award receives an engraved plaque and letters of congratulations sent to his/her principal and superintendent of schools, in addition to an invitation to conduct the Middle School Concert Band, if he/she is a middle school director or the High School 9-12 Concert Band, if he/she is a high school director, at the All-District Clinic.
